Dr Kumar has been a Consultant Specialist Surgeon for over twelve years in the UK and Queensland. He was head of the surgical department at Toowoomba Hospital for three years before moving to Cairns.
Harish trained in the UK with leading internationally renowned surgeons in advanced minimally invasive (key-hole) and cancer surgery in Yorkshire. Dr Kumar has a keen interest in research and his molecular research in cancer development has been published in numerous international journals.
Dr Kumar’s surgical expertise includes, General Surgery and Endocrine Surgery. He has special interest in keyhole surgery for gallstone disease involving bile duct stones as well as laparoscopic splenectomy, surgery for reflux and hiatus hernia. He also performs both laparoscopic and open surgery for cancer of Stomach, Oesophagus and Large Bowel.
Earlier in his career Dr Kumar led a very large and busy Bariatric Surgical Unit in the UK for nearly ten years. He performs all procedures to help patients lose weight including lap band, laparoscopic bypass (both conventional and omega loop bypass), and sleeve gastrectomy. Harish specifically has extensive experience in failed and re-do Bariatric Surgery.
Dr Kumar enjoys teaching and training and has trained Senior Fellows from various European and Australasian countries over the years in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.
Dr Kumar also performs diagnostic and advanced therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy (ESD, EMR, stents, POEM etc) He is also a member of many international academic associations including FSO (International Federation for surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Disorders), SAGES, OSSANZ, ANZGOSA.
